The Joy of Creating Without Requiring an End Result

One of the ways to ignite your creative fire and keep it burning over the long term is to remember the joy of creating as a valid end in its own right.

Of course there’s no doubt that it’s wonderful to have creative projects with intended outcomes to serve specific purposes.

These could be anything from sharing your ideas with others by writing a blog on a topic you love or inspiring people to see the world with new eyes through taking photographs of awe-inspiring landscapes.

However, it’s also important to reconnect regularly with the joy of creating without requiring an end result to remind yourself of the immense value of the creative process itself.

Embodied Experience of Deep Flow

I feel this is especially the case with the conscious approach to creative living that has surfaced as my core purpose because it leads to an embodied experience of deep flow that infuses all areas of your life.

The emphasis on conscious alignment amplifies the effect of being fully present to the process rather than approaching it simply as a means to an end.

That shift is hugely significant and has immensely positive and transformative benefits including opening your heart, uplifting your spirits and energizing your impulse to explore new possibilities.

Enjoy the Freedom of Now

It also serves to release you from all that you’ve been taught about everything requiring an outcome or objective that’s usually determined by your head and always a future goal to work towards.

Of course it’s fine to aim for intentions that reflect your authentic core.

Yet the future unfolds from who you are and the actions you take in the present moment.

So the reframe on your creative projects always requiring an end result is to see the objective as developing your capacity to enjoy the freedom and flow of Now!

Dive In

My recommendation for you this week is to give yourself permission to play with creating something for no reason other than the sheer joy of doing so.

Imagine a child kicking a pile of autumn leaves or jumping in a puddle just for fun, or picture yourself watching the sunset over the ocean whilst swinging on a swing.

Then apply the same principle to any form of creative expression that appeals to you.

You could:

  • Write a short story that takes you into a magical realm where anything is possible.
  • Draw a scene from your story and paint it with bright colours that you love.
  • Buy some sculpting clay and shape it into your favourite fruit, flower or face.

Remember that you don’t need to be the next J. K. Rowling, Vincent van Gogh or Henry Moore to validate this process.

Nor do you have to share what you create with anyone else unless you choose to do so.

This suggestion is just for you.

And there’s no requirement for any end result other than remembering your freedom to choose an uplifting creative experience for yourself.

Enjoy!

What creative forms will you give yourself permission to play with this week? Please share your ideas and experience below. Thank you!

Personal Message

As always, I very much hope you enjoy reading my reflections on this topic and benefit from following up on my suggestions.

I just thought I’d let you know that I’ll be taking a break from the blog for a couple of weeks while I’m away on holiday for some much needed down time.

I’ll be back to share more “Conscious Writing for Creative Living” stories, experience and inspiration soon!

  • Julia – have a great time away. today, i’m going to practice this creativity just for the fun of it, by sitting in a new spot, with a book i’d not usually read, soaking up the new view and all the sensual input and enjoying whatever bubles up. thank you for this invitation. peter

    • Thank you Peter; it is lovely having a break in the sun! I hope you enjoyed sitting in your new spot with the new view and new sensory input. Till soon, Julia

  • HI Julia, I hope you are enjoying your time away, I have been on a retreat to reconnect with myself at a deeper level. I realise now that I was in a state of brain fog which was making it hard to write. Being in nature and spending time for myself has released the fog and I am back in my creative flow with renewed clarity and purpose to complete my second book!

    • Hi Jeanine, yes thank you! It’s great to hear that you’ve been on a retreat (which I also love experiencing myself and leading for others too!) and that you’ve reconnected with your creative flow. Enjoy taking your next steps with with your new book 🙂
