Letting Go and Making Way

Friday 29 December 2017 - Posted by Julia McCutchen

The days between Xmas and New Year feel to me like the hinterland of the year.*

It’s a time that’s beyond the focus of family, friends and food, and before the start of whatever delightful surprises the New Year has in store for us all!

As the festive activities fall into respite, I take the opportunity to breathe into the space of simply being.

Clearing

My first priority (always) is to rest and recharge as I know only too well the difference it makes to the clarity I need to craft my vision for the next phase of the unfolding dream.

From there I’m drawn in to some gentle yet constructive doing.

That usually involves some clearing out and letting go to create an abundance of space for a whole new wave of energy to pour through.

In the last few days I’ve cleared all kinds of clutter including:

  • Ways of thinking and mind maps of ideas that haven’t materialized and no longer feel relevant;
  • Papers, files, folders and whole trays of information containing notes I no longer need;
  • And a recently accumulated pile of stuff at the bottom of the hall cupboard which I’ve been meaning to sort out for weeks!

Releasing

The process of releasing also requires letting go of any attachments to people, places or projects that no longer serve your current reality.

Who you’ve become through the transformation you’ve experienced is the space out of which your future arises.

The clearer that space is, the more aligned the details of your life will be with the real authentic part of you that’s ready to shine.

Reflecting

And yes, this does require some time, reflection and feeling your way into making conscious choices about what’s truly important and resonant for you at this time.

Yet it seems to me that clearing, releasing, letting go of the old and making way for the new is an ideal way to complete the year.

What better approach to prepare yourself for all that has yet to manifest creatively, authentically and joyfully through you as the wheel of life continues to turn?

What are you clearing, releasing and letting go of as 2017 draws to a close? Please share your comments and reactions below. Thank you!

* “Hinterland” is also the title of a timeless album from electronic instrumentalist William Orbit in the Strange Cargo series in case you’d like to explore a possible soundtrack as well!

  • Julia,
    Thank you for the reminder that clearing out and releasing is a way to make space for the new. Some of the things I need to clear out:
    -materials used while writing my book
    -Files that hold stuff that is obsolete
    -stacks of papers that are no longer relevant
    -Routines that need modifying, updating, etc.

    While I often resist “letting go” it helps to remember that it’s not always about loss. There is also the openness to all that is possible and welcoming something new, different, refreshing~~and life-giving.

    • Hi Helen, thank you so much for sharing your list of things you need to clear out. I’m sure that many people will resonate with what you’re choosing to release and hopefully be inspired to take action too.

      You’re so right about letting go not necessarily being about loss. It’s a valuable mindset shift to reframe letting go in the way that you’ve described. I particularly like “life-giving” – beautifully put!

  • Thank you, julia, for this timely reminder. I am just recovering from xmas and the New Year, but now I feel ready to do some de-cluttering before I start writing. I seem to have recovered my energy and my creativity. I have new plans on how to deal with my book, and today i wrote a new prologue for it, my first writing of the year!

    • Hi Daphne, good for you; and I’m delighted to hear that you’re getting back on track with your energy, your creativity and your writing. Congratulations on the new plans and prologue for your book. Enjoy the next phase of your conscious writing journey!

    • Thank you Julie, and to you! It sounds like you’ve had a wonderfully productive couple of weeks clearing out and making space for all the new energy that is undoubtedly on it’s way – especially now that you’ve created so much space for it! Being open to all that has yet to show up in your life is ideal. I recommend you pay attention to any signs (internal nudges or external perceptions) that may point you in one direction or another and trust your intuition to guide you. Thanks for your lovely comment 🙂
