Winter Solstice Celebration

“In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer.” Albert Camus

This is one of my favourite mid-winter quotes. I’m sharing it with you to inspire you to find the “invincible summer” within you today!

The winter solstice is one of the oldest winter celebrations in the world. On the shortest day of the year when the darkness reaches its zenith, the wheel turns and the life-giving light of the sun returns.

I love the fact that people throughout the ages have marked this moment in time as significant on so many different levels.

The Druids, for example, would give the mistletoe that grew on oak trees as a blessing. Oak trees were seen as sacred and the winter fruit of the mistletoe symbolized the light of life in the dark winter months.

The Inner Light

I choose to have mistletoe in the house to celebrate the turn of the season as well as to symbolize the eternal inner light of Truth.

In fact, the winter solstice for me is about pausing for reflection and looking within to affirm my internal alignment with the “invincible summer” of Camus’ quote.

With this in place, I’m all set to enjoy the festive season and outward focus of socializing and spending time with family and friends from a space of deep authenticity.

Winter Solstice Invitation

So my invitation for you today is to:

  • Take a 15 minute break from busyness and settle into stillness, silence and space; these are the essential qualities of the winter season and the true starting point of the creative cycle.
  • Turn your focus inwards and open your heart to discover the inner light of your “invincible summer” and immerse yourself in this timeless truth.
  • Write in your journal afterwards to capture the essence of your experience in the form of words to serve as your guiding light for a truly joyful and authentic festive celebration.

What are your thoughts about celebrating the winter solstice and finding the “invincible summer” within you? Please share your comments below. Thank you 🙂

I wrote this post to celebrate the winter solstice last year, and although I usually love writing new blogs for you each week, when there’s timeless wisdom involved such as in the Camus quote, there are always new levels of meaning to discover.

So I’m inspired to share this prompt again and I’m posting it a day earlier than usual to tie in with today’s winter solstice. I hope you enjoy aligning with your internal “invincible summer”!
