The image of an iceberg is a wonderful metaphor for the creative writing process.
The 10% we see above the surface of the water represents the actual words of the blogs, books and other communications we write. It arises out of the 90% that is largely hidden from view yet without which the iceberg would not exist at all.
The same principle applies to our writing. A large proportion of the work we do as writers is invisible to our readers but greatly determines the quality of our work and the contribution it makes to the world.
The following 5 practices may not be obvious as part of the mix from the outside looking in when we read the latest book from our favourite author.
Yet, having spoken with thousands of highly successful Conscious Writers, and from both personal and professional experience of Conscious Writing in action, these practices come up time and again as the foundation for authentic success.
I invite you to dip into one or all of these practices to the extent it feels right for you at this time and see from your own personal experience what contribution they make to your writing, your authorship, and your life.

The New Year is a fabulous time to inject a fresh burst of energy into your plans for writing and publishing your book.
So here are 7 tips to help you have your best writing year yet:
1. Identify what is genuinely important to you about your writing. So many people today live in the fast lane. As a result, it is easy to lose sight of what really matters.
With your writing, being consciously connected to what is truly important enables you to give yourself permission to prioritise your writing time. This means that you will get your writing done and feel more creatively satisfied as a result.
So start this year by taking time to re-connect to the source of your inspiration to write. Then write about that in your journal to refer back to in the coming months.
2. Clarify your vision. With that connection in place to keep you grounded, the next step is to sharpen your focus on where you are heading. Being clear about your vision will inspire and motivate you to maintain your progress.
One of the most powerful ways of bringing your vision to life is to create a Vision Board. This involves making a collage of images to represent yourself as an author and what you want to achieve with your writing.
If you have already made one, the turn of the year is a wonderful opportunity to add new images which feel appropriate for this year, or make a fresh one to reflect your new ideas for 2013.

When it comes to writing a book, most people would agree that inspiration is a key ingredient. Yet inspiration alone is not enough. The sparks of inspiration need to be fanned into the flames of action for creative potential to manifest both on the page and in the world.
Inspiration is the first stage in the creative process. Writers who know their sources of inspiration and immerse themselves regularly in situations that are rich with potential never run out of ideas for their writing.
As the creative wheel turns, inspiration flows naturally into the realm of imagination where detail is added. Here the original impulse expands, and new, often unexpected possibilities unfold.
Yet without appropriate action, all of this remains as creative potential. Inspiration needs action to manifest its full spectrum of colours for everyone to benefit from and enjoy.
Writers need to understand that this creative dynamic applies to every stage of writing a book and becoming a successful published author – whatever form that takes and whatever definition of “success” is appropriate to you.
Inspiration and action combine for your words to meet the page and for connections to be made directly with your readership through your platform-building activities.
Obvious though this may be to some, understanding and applying what you know to your own situation each and every day takes real focus and commitment.
So here are 3 tips to support you to combine inspiration and action, with the emphasis on “taking action”!

“When I’ve caught up with my emails and dealt with xxx, I’ll write my blog post.”
“I’ll just do xxx and then I’ll write the next section of my book.”
Recognise either of these statements or variations on the same theme?
Feel free to fill in the xxx with whatever fits your particular situation and your way of thinking. Whatever xxx you come up with, essentially they all relate to the same issue – procrastination.
However plausible the xxx appears to be, there are times when all writers fall under the spell of procrastination.
Procrastination simply means that we put off taking action on something we want or need to do, and convince ourselves that tomorrow will be a better day to make a start. We allow ourselves to become side-tracked and find endless ways to justify why it makes more sense to do something else first.
On occasions, taking some time out to allow more space for ideas to develop is absolutely the right decision. However, we need to balance this with the reality that “tomorrow” may never come and sometimes the delay results in lost opportunities.
For some people who want to write, procrastination is a chronic condition which unfortunately means that their writing just doesn’t get done – ever! Or it may take so long that by the time the words meets the page the energy and enthusiasm have all but drained away.
In such situations, there are usually other factors at work including lack of self-belief, fear and a whole host of other resistance-related issues which need to be addressed separately.
For most writers, procrastination pops up in milder forms. It holds us back when we have a challenging topic to write about, when we’re not entirely sure what we want to say or when we don’t feel confident about undertaking activities relating to building our platform.
Yet, as anyone who writes regularly knows, overcoming procrastination is part of the process of becoming an author and living the truth of that each and every day.
So here are 7 tips to help you to overcome procrastination:

Making a commitment to something – or someone – is all about making a pledge or a promise … and then engaging yourself totally in the fulfilment of it.
As far as your writing is concerned, developing and strengthening the quality of your commitment will mean the difference between writing or not writing, and taking action or allowing resistance to hold you back.
Commitment sets the scene for all of the small choices that you make every day in relation to your writing.
It also guides you when you come to make the larger decisions regarding how to move forwards when you’re ready to take your work out to the marketplace. And it helps you to access the information and support you need to do so.
Ultimately, your degree of commitment to your writing will be a strong determining factor in your experience of ‘success’ or ‘failure’ – however you choose to define what those terms mean for you.

Be prepared to step out of your comfort zone when it comes to pitching and promoting your book …
The Writer’s Journey combines passion for writing about your subject or story with the desire to communicate that message or share that story with as wide an audience as possible.
The efforts involved in successfully writing a book for publication are usually surpassed by the rewards gained at the many different levels that writers experience the joys of published authorship.

If you want to become a published author, prioritise a professional approach, high standards of excellence and action!
Last year was another year of major drama in the publishing industry:
The trend of major acquisitions continued with huge conglomerate publishing houses taking over small, medium and even sizeable publishers to create even larger international publishing groups.
Many independent publishers had to become ever more inventive with their publishing decisions just to stay in the game …
