Never Enough Time

Do you ever feel there’s never enough time to do everything?

I certainly do, and it’s a real challenge for many people, especially when it comes to identifying and following through on genuine priorities.

Whether those relate to writing a blog or book, developing a new business project or navigating a major transition skilfully, it’s tough to surface from the time-consuming stuff of life.

As a naturally organised person, I do:

  • Process small tasks straight away so I only handle paperwork once;
  • Batch similar work together such as coaching sessions on specific days;
  • Schedule everything with extra time because things always take longer than you think!

Yet there’s more to it than simply increasing your speed and/or working smarter.

One approach to finding time for what’s truly important is to shift your perspective.

A quick way to do so is to interrupt the future focus, drop your attention into your belly, and take 3-5 deep breaths to inhabit your body fully and reconnect consciously with the present moment.

This simple action calms your central nervous system and refreshes your view so you can see options that “weren’t there” before.

It’s a welcome relief from “never enough time”!

Today, I set myself the challenge of writing a “quick read” blog in 200 words or less and this is what came out. The more you use this technique, the more effective it becomes. Enjoy!

    • Thanks Roe, that’s good to hear. It took just as long as writing a longer piece (!) but I enjoyed the challenge and intend to write more like this so I’m glad you enjoyed it!

  • Thanks, Julia, for addressing this topic. Shifting ones perspective seems to be the solution for coping with a lot of things. For me the shift includes changing my “thoughts” about “not enough”along with doing what ever I can to inhabit the present moment.

    • Yes indeed Helen. Your strategy sounds like a good one. Combining present moment awareness with consciously interrupting patterns of habitual thinking is a powerful mix for shifting your perspective. I wish you well with everything.

  • When I am feeling overwhelmed at my desk then I stop lean back in my chair and take 3 deep breaths.

    That shifts my energy from the buzz in my head to my body.

    So I continue with more peace.

    • It’s great to hear that the 3 deep breaths enable you to continue with more peace and less buzz in your head. Thanks for sharing your approach John.
