Review by Richard Bell, of Writing magazine:

‘Julia McCutchen’s excellent book is targeted at non-fiction writers, aiming to help them find their way into publication. The sub-title says a lot: How to prepare your non-fiction writing for professional presentation to agents and publishers.

The disciplines dictated by the aim of getting your book accepted come into play the moment you start writing. The non-fiction author needs to understand the shape of a book that will appeal to a publisher, and Julia McCutchen’s advice will give a good feel for that.

From an explanation of the way the publishing industry works, the book goes on to a detailed analysis of how you should put together your book proposal to send to agent or publisher. This analysis looks at what should be included in the proposal (and what should be left out!) and how it should be presented.

Whether you should find an agent or contact a publisher directly is another subject the book deals with. The answer will vary for different authors and for different books, but you need to understand the factors that influence the decision.

If you are writing a non-fiction book, or are planning to do so, then this book could make all the difference to your finally getting into print.’

Review by Paul Beeston, for Mission Coach Newsletter:

‘I like this book and found it informative and concise. Having recently attended a writer’s conference where a number of Literary Agents were speaking I can now see the value of writing a good proposal, a significant part of this book is dedicated to doing this.

It is extremely helpful to know the realities of publishing and to know we only have a few minutes to grab the attention of the person reading the proposal.

As a new author serious about getting your book published or as an author who has received a number of rejections; do yourself a favour, get this book and follow the suggestions Julia McCutchen makes.’
