The image of an iceberg is a wonderful metaphor for the creative writing process.
The 10% we see above the surface of the water represents the actual words of the blogs, books and other communications we write. It arises out of the 90% that is largely hidden from view yet without which the iceberg would not exist at all.
The same principle applies to our writing. A large proportion of the work we do as writers is invisible to our readers but greatly determines the quality of our work and the contribution it makes to the world.
The following 5 practices may not be obvious as part of the mix from the outside looking in when we read the latest book from our favourite author.
Yet, having spoken with thousands of highly successful Conscious Writers, and from both personal and professional experience of Conscious Writing in action, these practices come up time and again as the foundation for authentic success.
I invite you to dip into one or all of these practices to the extent it feels right for you at this time and see from your own personal experience what contribution they make to your writing, your authorship, and your life.

Being aware of your mindset and how it either helps or hinders your progress as a writer is fundamental to your success as an author.
Many people understand a mindset to be “a collection of thought processes which are characteristic to an individual or a group” (Roget’s II: The New Thesaurus).
However, there is an important ingredient missing from this definition.
Mindset is not just about your thoughts; it is also about your emotions. What you think is crucial but what you feel is even more significant when it comes to writing a book for publication, and indeed with everything you do in life.
Thought and emotion are an immensely powerful combination which can either work for, or against, what you want to achieve with your writing.

This is a question which is likely to apply to increasing numbers of writers as the publishing landscape continues to shift in response to new developments in technology and readers’ requirements.
Opportunities with print-on-demand open up possibilities for writers to go ahead and publish their own books even when their ultimate goal is securing a deal with a traditional publisher.
The most important point to realize is that it is not enough simply to print and publish your book and expect an agent or publisher to be impressed sufficiently by those actions alone.

In the news this week we have heard about the phenomenal sales of Dan Brown’s new book The Lost Symbol.
In fact his publisher, Transworld, claimed that ‘in its first 36 hours the book had broken the record of total lifetime sales for any adult hardback novel ever published in the UK.’*
The first print run of the book was a staggering one million copies and apparently the reprint button is about to be pushed for the next printing.
All of this must be very exciting for Dan Brown, his agent and his publisher.
However, the sting in the tail of this story is that in the scramble for market share, retailers have taken discounts to ever deeper levels resulting in copies being sold for just £4.99.

Give yourself the gift of qualified support to reach your goal of being published
The Writer’s Journey can be a lonely path. So much of what is involved in the writing process goes on ‘behind the scenes’.
Working from the ‘inside out’, the early stages of the journey are all about you and your connection to the words on the page.
So you start by looking within to discover the true source of your writer’s voice. This actually lies in the deepest part of your True Self – your essence or spirit (or whatever word feels right to you).
This is also where you discover the gateway to your most original ideas via direct access to the creative energy which fuels the fires of your writer’s soul.
