How to Strengthen Your Writing With Silence

“Let us be silent, that we may hear the whispers of the gods.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

Silence is one of the most significant components of the creative writing process. It is the alpha and omega of Conscious Writing, and invites readers into the essence of the stories you are telling and the ideas you are sharing.

Writing with silence leads to active participation from your readers who use their imagination to complete the picture your words are painting in the most meaningful way for them as individuals.

Powerful writing is punctuated with silence that creates space for your readers to experience the living reality beyond and through your words. As a result, your writing has immense depth and a memorable impact.

“He who does not understand your silence will probably not understand your words.” Elbert Hubbard

The 5 Core Practices of Highly Successful Conscious Writers

The image of an iceberg is a wonderful metaphor for the creative writing process.

The 10% we see above the surface of the water represents the actual words of the blogs, books and other communications we write. It arises out of the 90% that is largely hidden from view yet without which the iceberg would not exist at all.

The same principle applies to our writing. A large proportion of the work we do as writers is invisible to our readers but greatly determines the quality of our work and the contribution it makes to the world.

The following 5 practices may not be obvious as part of the mix from the outside looking in when we read the latest book from our favourite author.

Yet, having spoken with thousands of highly successful Conscious Writers, and from both personal and professional experience of Conscious Writing in action, these practices come up time and again as the foundation for authentic success.

I invite you to dip into one or all of these practices to the extent it feels right for you at this time and see from your own personal experience what contribution they make to your writing, your authorship, and your life.

How to Harness the Creative Power of Stillness

Perfect_momentSix weeks ago I broke a large bone in my foot and entered a phase of involuntary stillness that has been both challenging and surprisingly rewarding.

As a core component of my daily practice, stillness has been an integral part of my life for a long time. So I chose to accept this unexpected situation fully and see it as an extended meditation on stillness and surrender.

Naturally, there have been moments when I have felt a long way from this balanced perspective! Yet, overall, the requirement to prioritize physical stillness has opened up a whole new level of appreciation for the depth of creative potential accessible to us all through stillness.

Fortunately, there is no need for you to have such a dramatic entry point or such an extended duration of stillness to benefit from the conscious and creative gifts it has to offer.

Conscious Stillness

Conscious stillness means being fully present to deep inner and outer stillness at every level. Having a still body with a chattering mind will not deliver up the same results.

When we prioritize complete stillness, even for short periods of time, a whole new world is revealed. Imagine seeing the reflected world in the surface of a lake and suddenly finding yourself within the reflection looking out.

The Journey of Birthing a Book

BeautifulSpiral_ColouredI am delighted to introduce this guest post by author and spiritual teacher Amoda Maa Jeevan. Enjoy!

Writing a book, for me, is like giving birth. From the moment of conception to the emergence of the final manuscript, the journey follows an archetypal pattern that transcends any “how to’s” or “techniques”.

It’s by tapping into this universal birthing process – and by the way, it doesn’t matter whether you’re a man or a woman, we all have this impulse embedded in our genetic coding – that we can bypass the voice of ego and get into a zone of authentic expression.

Writing from this deeper place makes a world of difference to how your words meet the page and to how the page is read by your audience.

Voice of Ego or Voice of Authentic Self?

The ego is concerned with self-gratification: its primary motivation is “What can I get?” In other words, it is driven by the need to add to its sense of identity. It doesn’t actually matter whether this identity is a positive one or a negative one, as long as it “pumps up” what it already knows about itself. This is called “staying in the comfort zone”.

Whole Mind Writing

headandbulbandbook_TomEvansI am delighted to introduce this guest article from writer’s unblocker and author Tom Evans. Enjoy!

When you are writing in the zone, an amazing transformation in your physiology and neurology is taking place. Something much more subtle too is occurring across time and space.

If you could get the head of a writer in an MRI scanner when they are in flow, you would see both halves of the brain lit up at the same time.

For 95% or so of writers, as some are wired differently, this is what is going on. The right brain is holding the vision, shape and scope of what they are writing. It will be forming sentences and ’looking’ backwards and forwards over the book to check that what is currently being written fits in with the whole.

At exactly the same time, the left brain will be focusing on the act of writing itself and that the actual words used follow grammatical rules and are spelt correctly. Note this is a bit of a generalisation as there is much cross communication going between the hemispheres.

For the writer who is ’out of sorts’, something else might be in play. The left brain and outer cortex might be running thoughts that they might not have enough time to write or harbouring fears of self doubt about their talent. The right brain might be dreaming about a six figure advance and retiring in the Caribbean after selling a million books before the book is even written. Read the rest of this entry ›

5 Ways to Support Your Creative Mindset as a Writer

think and dream big

It is naturally a high priority for all writers to hone the skills of the writing craft.

However sharply you pitch your book, the words on the page are where the rubber hits the road in terms of success with agents, publishers and readers.

Yet this represents the tip of the writing iceberg. As an author, your preparation for writing also needs to include cultivating a creative mindset.

Unless you have your creative mindset fully charged, your words may never reach the page.

Your mindset includes both the thoughts you have about your writing and the feelings you have about yourself as a writer. Both will have a significant impact on your success – or otherwise – as an author.

Your thoughts and feelings need to be clear and in alignment to support your creative expression. Whether or not you believe that thoughts create your reality, when you doubt the value of your ability or your contribution, the creative impulse dries up.

Here are 5 ways to support your creative mindset as a writer:

Writer’s Journey Tip: Feel the Feelings as You Write

Woman at beach throwing her arms back behind her. Many writers write because they feel motivated to make a positive difference in the lives of their readers with the information, insights and stories they are inspired to share.

One of the most powerful and enduring ways to achieve this relates to how your readers feel when they read your words. The impact of powerful writing can last for years as the memory of the feeling remains long after the actual words are forgotten.

Feelings are universal and provide a level of connection that resonates with the very heart of what it means to be human.

So how do you convey the feelings you aim to trigger in your readers?
