It is a core principle of the Writer’s Journey to nurture your creative spirit on an on-going basis. Yet if it’s been a while since you gave your inspiration a boost how, and where, do you start? Here’s a possible way forwards for you.
Walking in nature can be deeply inspiring and is a good place to start. You may well find that ideas and creative thoughts come to you along the way. So take a notebook and a pen and when you feel the flickers of inspiration stirring, find a place to sit down for a while to write.
Invite the fires of inspiration to burn brightly within you and brainstorm ideas of other possible situations or activities that could offer you the opportunity to access your feelings of inspiration.
Don’t think too hard about it. Just write as many ideas down as you can – or draw quick images – and aim to capture as muc h as possible. Keep your pen moving on the page as a way of overriding the censorship of the inner critic who may show up and try to steal the show!
Your ideas could include different settings when you are outside in nature such as by the sea, walking along cliff tops or in a forest, as well as different times of the day such as watching a beautiful sunset.

Julia McCutchen interviews Joseph Sestito
Thursday 6th May at
16:00 BST / 11:00 EST
Writing and living are at their best when you are in the present moment, living with intensity and exuberance.
Yet, to a greater or lesser degree, most of us are caught in the grips of what the Buddhist traditions call the “Four Worldly Addictions”. Learning how to break free from their grip reduces your suffering, and liberates your creativity and happiness.
Blending contemporary insights from psychotherapy with ancient insights from Eastern and Western Philosophy, Joseph Sestito will show you how to unlock your creativity to apply to your writing as well as to your relationships and to your in life in general.

Having worked with literally hundreds of aspiring authors over the years, I have witnessed what works – and what doesn’t – when it comes to real progress being made with writing.
As I’m sure you won’t be surprised to hear, there needs to be a mix of inspiration, information, guidance, feedback and support in varying degress according to each person’s individual requirements.
The one single factor which seems to make the most difference to most writers is having an on-going working relationship with a professional who knows the writing journey inside out.
Yet is it enough for a teacher to teach without being currently engaged in the writing process themselves?

Writing a book is a ’whole person’ journey. This means that all aspects of ourselves are involved in the process – physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual.
When these are in harmonious alignment, the well of inspiration overflows with ideas, the words meet the page effortlessly and rewarding connections are made with publishers and readers.
Yet maintaining this state of being ‘in the zone’ isn’t always easy and the reality is that the path to publication involves finding a way through many different challenges.
One of the most challenging aspects of writing a book for publication is the emotional roller coaster we discover ourselves to be on.
And there are times when we wonder why nobody told us quite how hard the whole creative process can feel sometimes!

A few days ago, I felt I had reached a metaphorical ‘rock’ in the middle of my usual free-flowing stream of ideas.
The impulse was strong & clear. I was ready to ‘raise the bar’ with my ‘emerging vision’ project but I just wasn’t sure how best to achieve that.
I certainly had lots of possibilities in mind but couldn’t yet see a way forwards which felt ‘right’ at every level (authentic alignment is a high priority for me).
So I wrote about how I was feeling in my journal and spontaneously sent out a plea for help to guide my next steps. Then I let it go and moved on to other things.
Within 36 hours I had my answer!

I was recently working on developing some ideas for a new coaching programme, when seemingly out of nowhere, a sub-title came to mind which I loved immediately.
I felt a strong resonance with the words and delighted at the way in which they captured the essence of what I feel most passionate about when it comes to writing.
Interestingly, I quickly realised that they didn’t fit the new coaching programme at all. But that didn’t matter as I knew exactly where they belonged – my ‘emerging vision’ project.
The new coaching programme had simply acted as a stepping stone for me to discover exactly the right words to describe the focus of my brand new project – the details of which are yet to be revealed!
