the activity of the higher imagination,

the intuition, the artistic level of the unconscious

Writer’s Journey Tip: The Importance of Endings

05. Intothelight351791SmallAs a writer, the way in which you begin any creative writing session sets the tone for everything that follows. The mindset you bring to the page affects how your writing flows – or not as the case may be!

Beginnings are important at every level, from connecting to the creative impulse as it arises to taking time to prepare so that all aspects of yourself are in complete alignment and you feel ready to write.

One simple but effective way to do this is to spend some time in stillness before you write to encourage deep writing to flow.

Your primary focus may well be on the best way to begin your writing session. However, endings are just as important because the way you complete your writing session will determine the quality, and the results, of your next activity.

Fire Up Your Imagination to Write

2011-07-15 21.45.20Most writers know the feeling of creative abundance. The energy of it sparkles, ideas are plentiful, there is a natural sense of infinite possibility and a real clarity of focus.

Yet how often is that feeling fully present? For many writers, the answer to that question is not often enough!

We forget that putting energy out to the world on a constant basis means that we need to replenish our inner creative well regularly. Unless we do so, we end up having to write despite feeling depleted just to get our writing done.

Even if we understand the importance of nurturing our creative soul, other commitments and priorities – real or imagined – frequently take precendence.

Breaking through onto a new level of creative abundance with your writing requires a conscious choice to fan the flames of your creative fire. So how do you fire up your imagination to write?

Ignite Your Creative Fire with Music and Dance

larmartreeWhen was the last time you immersed yourself fully in music and dance?

Your sense of self dissolves as you become one with music and movement. Energy flows for you to express yourself freely, time is of no significance and your experience is effortless and engaging.

What has this to do with writing you may well ask?

The parallels of being in the zone, including all the benefits of that experience, are clear. Yet there is more to it than that.

5 Qualities of Successful Authors #2 Commitment

Commitment_TickoverRedCircleMaking a commitment to something – or someone – is all about making a pledge or a promise … and then engaging yourself totally in the fulfilment of it.

As far as your writing is concerned, developing and strengthening the quality of your commitment will mean the difference between writing or not writing, and taking action or allowing resistance to hold you back.

Commitment sets the scene for all of the small choices that you make every day in relation to your writing.

It also guides you when you come to make the larger decisions regarding how to move forwards when you’re ready to take your work out to the marketplace. And it helps you to access the information and support you need to do so.

Ultimately, your degree of commitment to your writing will be a strong determining factor in your experience of ‘success’ or ‘failure’ – however you choose to define what those terms mean for you.

The 5 Qualities of Successful Authors

Courage_Lion2One of the aspects of writing a book for publication that I emphasize with the Writer’s Journey approach is to give as much attention to preparing yourself for published authorship as you do to preparing your work.

This is because who you become as an author is just as important as what you write.

One facet of this relates to developing and strengthening certain qualities that are proven to be of value to support you on the path to publication – and beyond!

The 5 qualities that I recommend cultivating are: courage, commitment, perseverance, patience and authenticity.

Courage

It is said that courage is a decision made in the face of fear, not in the absence of it. And most writers I know would agree that courage to face fears, anxieties and doubts go hand-in-hand with the process of writing.

Why is that?

When Your Creative Vision First Shows Up in the World

Tip of the IcebergA few days ago I experienced another of my ‘creative downloads’ when a whole series of ideas relating to my ‘emerging vision’ project arrived at 3 to 5 minute intervals over the course of a couple of hours.

There was the usual feeling of insistence to write the ideas down which, as I’m sure many writers know, is typical in this kind of situation.

The trigger on this occasion was the first appearance of my vision ‘in the world’ which came in the form of visuals for the logo design turning up in my inbox (a bit of a clue here!).

Seeing the first stage of this vision coming to fruition was incredibly exciting and felt like crossing a major threshold.

What had previously been only in my imagination and hidden from the view of others, was now becoming visible.

It reminded me of an iceberg which is a powerful metaphor for the whole creative process and an image I often share with the writers I work with. Read the rest of this entry ›

Nurture Your Creative Spirit

DreamsInspiration, imagination and creativity are important ingredients if you value a quality of life which is truly rich and rewarding.

Collectively they represent a powerful driving force which makes projects of any sort possible.

Without a doubt they are of vital significance to anyone who writes, or who wants to write, and this applies both to fiction and non-fiction writing.

Yet how many of us have been taught to value our intellect over our creativity?
