I wonder how many of us got up to greet the dawn at 4.44am (here in the UK) on this bright summer solstice morning?
I am really happy to have done so as it truly was an awe inspiring experience. Blessed with mainly clear skies, I stood in the middle of the field next to our house with a high 360 degree panoramic view listening to the chorus of birds in the nearby wood. The deep red glow reflecting off wispy clouds set the sky on fire with what really felt like the “dawn of a brand new day”.
Celebrating the power of the sun when it is at its most potent has been of spiritual significance for thousands of years.
Creatively this is a time to celebrate growth and full expression of all the gifts you have to share with the world through your writing, speaking, relationships … and through simply being true to who you are deep inside.

One of the challenges facing many of the writers I work with is the mismatch between the motivation to write and the reality of the writing actually being done!
There are many “reasons” for writers not writing as much as they would ideally like to and unwittingly becoming master procrastinators. Usually these include not having enough time, not being clear about how to start or what to write next, not feeling inspired on a particular day to write on your chosen topic … the list goes on.
To address this situation, your Writer’s Journey Tip of the Week is to have more than one writing project on the go at any one time and include different types of writing to maintain your creative flow.
As a result, if you are temporarily lacking ideas and inspiration for your main project (your book) you can choose another project to work on (a blog post or short story) which might feel more “do-able”.

Julia McCutchen interviews Andrea Beaulieu
Thursday 3rd June at
16:00 BST / 11:00 EST
We all have it – that still, small voice that urges us gently, quietly, but ever so confidently, in the direction of our highest good. It is our authentic voice – the one we were born knowing. Then, through experience and the conditioning of the mind, we often lose our conscious connection to it, except perhaps during times of danger, or when we have surrendered to our authentic self so deeply and joyfully that we hear it and follow it.
That same voice is the voice of our highest creativity. It is the voice that gives us the perfect idea, solution or direction. It gives us the perfect words and actions to express our uniqueness. It is the voice that shows up when we face the blank page, if we listen for it and to it. It is our authentic voice.

Julia McCutchen interviews Joseph Sestito
Thursday 6th May at
16:00 BST / 11:00 EST
Writing and living are at their best when you are in the present moment, living with intensity and exuberance.
Yet, to a greater or lesser degree, most of us are caught in the grips of what the Buddhist traditions call the “Four Worldly Addictions”. Learning how to break free from their grip reduces your suffering, and liberates your creativity and happiness.
Blending contemporary insights from psychotherapy with ancient insights from Eastern and Western Philosophy, Joseph Sestito will show you how to unlock your creativity to apply to your writing as well as to your relationships and to your in life in general.

Here in the UK we have just changed our clocks to British Summer Time (and we’re all looking forward to the sunshine returning!)
Although I love the extra hour of daylight in the evenings, the transition itself can be unsettling to the natural flow until the new rhythm settles. Once that has happened, the shift in perspective always opens up fresh ideas and creative opportunities.
A similar result can be gained from choosing voluntarily to change old habits or patterns of thought and behaviour which no longer serve you. And Spring is certainly an excellent time to refresh your commitment to your writing and all activities relating to your success as an author.
Habits can be hard and initially uncomfortable to break. However, it is always worth releasing the creative energy which becomes locked in a loop when you are entrenched in habitual routines. So here’s a tip to help you to just that:
- Alter your regular daily routine in one significant area which has an effect on the habit you are aiming to let go of.
For example, if you normally do your writing after you have finished a whole load of other tasks on your ‘to do’ list, try turning this around and do your writing first.
Repeat this approach for 21 days to reinforce your new rhythm … and then review the results. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if you discover an improvement in the quality and the quantity of your writing, all from one simple, yet well-chosen change.
I’d love to hear about the changes you are choosing to make this Spring in support of your writing, so do add your comments below.
Enjoy the journey!
Julia
PS Talking of Spring and supporting your writing, we currently have a Spring Equinox Bonus Interview offer at the International Association of Conscious & Creative Writers. Julia McCutchen interviews poet and author Jay Ramsay
Thursday 1st April at
16:00 BST / 11:00 EST
A poem is like a butterfly. A moment seeds itself inside us. A memory.
An experience when we saw, we felt, perhaps even, we knew.
It touches something deep in us. Deeper than words. And something begins, in that inner space. Something that is uniquely ours to speak of.
There is a poet in all of us. However unknown or neglected that part of us may be, it is there, often just waiting for the right conditions to present itself.
Whether you write – or want to write – poetry, fiction or non-fiction, discovering the poet in you is like revealing the hidden treasure which will nourish your creative soul.
Writing poetry is also a powerful catalyst with the potential for inner healing and personal growth. By the end of this inspiring interview you will understand how:
- poetry is not just literature, it is a whole way of being, a whole way of relating to life
- poetry’s home is in the expression of the values that make our lives worthwhile
- poetry doesn’t just take place on the page, it is all around us in the living air
- so called amateur poets are sometimes more relevant than professional ones
- to be conscious of moments during the day when you experience poetry and apply that state of being to whatever your current writing project is
Jay Ramsay is the author of over 30 books most recently Out of Time: Selected Poems 1998-2008 (PS Avalon), Places of Truth (Awen), and The Poet in You (O Books). Co-founder of the Angels of Fire poetry collective in London in 1983, he has performed his work in public for many years.

About this time last year I made a decision to pursue an idea for a major new creative project despite having no idea how I was going to make it a reality or if it would actually work!
Yet I felt deeply inspired to focus my energy directly on my true passion of opening the way for people to discover their authentic voice – on the page and in the world. I also felt a strong impulse to serve a wide, international audience of aspiring and published authors who value a conscious and creative approach to writing for publication.
So I found a source of high quality, reliable information which resonated with me, and I took action to learn what I needed to know to transform my vision into reality.
Along the way, I had to pause to take care of other commitments and priorities. Yet the vision was taking shape so powerfully that I knew intuitively I was on track and chose to trust the unfolding process completely.
Fast forward to today and I am just emerging from what can only be described as the hugely successful launch of the International Association of Conscious & Creative Writers (IACCW).
So here are five of the valuable lessons I have been reminded of from this experience which can be applied to creating and launching any project:
