Creative Stepping Stones for Writers

Stepping_stonesI was recently working on developing some ideas for a new coaching programme, when seemingly out of nowhere, a sub-title came to mind which I loved immediately.

I felt a strong resonance with the words and delighted at the way in which they captured the essence of what I feel most passionate about when it comes to writing.

Interestingly, I quickly realised that they didn’t fit the new coaching programme at all. But that didn’t matter as I knew exactly where they belonged – my ‘emerging vision’ project.

The new coaching programme had simply acted as a stepping stone for me to discover exactly the right words to describe the focus of my brand new project – the details of which are yet to be revealed!

The creative process often works in unexpected ways and I love the unpredictability of those flashes of inspiration.

Naturally we can learn to work consciously and actively with the creative process when it comes to writing, or indeed any other form of creative expression.

What’s important is to remain open to letting ideas unfold in their own way – and often at their own pace – so that ultimately they find their right place.

Listening to the whispers of intuition continues to be one of the best ways to navigate creative stepping stones when it comes to writing.

So next time you have an idea about what the next scene of your novel is going to be, or the best way to describe an insight you want to share with your reader, pause for a moment first.

Ask yourself: could this be a stepping stone to something else which might fit even more perfectly?

Remaining open to seeing how, and where, your words might best be used is a wonderful way to explore possibilities which your rational mind could miss altogether.

I’d love to hear how creative stepping stones have shown up in your writing experience so do please share your stories and comments below.
