Mind Your Mindset for Successful Authorship

Idea_manBeing aware of your mindset and how it either helps or hinders your progress as a writer is fundamental to your success as an author.

Many people understand a mindset to be ‘a collection of thought processes which are characteristic to an individual or a group’ (Roget’s II: The New Thesaurus).

However, there is an important missing ingredient from this definition.

Mindset is not just about your thoughts, it is also very much about your emotions.

So what you think is crucial but what you feel is even more significant when it comes to writing a book for publication, and indeed with everything you do in life.

How to Answer Your Own Questions & Raise the Creative Bar

GowiththeFlowA few days ago, I felt I had reached a metaphorical ‘rock’ in the middle of my usual free-flowing stream of ideas.

The impulse was strong & clear. I was ready to ‘raise the bar’ with my ‘emerging vision’ project but I just wasn’t sure how best to achieve that.

I certainly had lots of possibilities in mind but couldn’t yet see a way forwards which felt ‘right’ at every level (authentic alignment is a high priority for me).

So I wrote about how I was feeling in my journal and spontaneously sent out a plea for help to guide my next steps. Then I let it go and moved on to other things.

Within 36 hours I had my answer!

How to Organise Your Writing Notes & Ideas

Morning_pagesMany creative people have lots of ideas but find it challenging to organize their notes into a workable structure for their book.

For those of you who are natural organizers, you may well find the following tips obvious. But for those of you who are drowning in more ideas than you know what to do with, this simple approach should really help.

Also, I have discovered that even when people know how to get organised, often they don’t actually put the theory into practice, and then wonder why they are feeling stuck or overwhelmed with their writing.

Record sales for Dan Brown but at what cost?

key_to_successIn the news this week we have heard about the phenomenal sales of Dan Brown’s new book The Lost Symbol.

In fact his publisher, Transworld, claimed that ‘in its first 36 hours the book had broken the record of total lifetime sales for any adult hardback novel ever published in the UK.’*

The first print run of the book was a staggering one million copies and apparently the reprint button is about to be pushed for the next printing.

All of this must be very exciting for Dan Brown, his agent and his publisher.

However, the sting in the tail of this story is that in the scramble for market share, retailers have taken discounts to ever deeper levels resulting in copies being sold for just £4.99.

Creative Stepping Stones for Writers

Stepping_stonesI was recently working on developing some ideas for a new coaching programme, when seemingly out of nowhere, a sub-title came to mind which I loved immediately.

I felt a strong resonance with the words and delighted at the way in which they captured the essence of what I feel most passionate about when it comes to writing.

Interestingly, I quickly realised that they didn’t fit the new coaching programme at all. But that didn’t matter as I knew exactly where they belonged – my ‘emerging vision’ project.

The new coaching programme had simply acted as a stepping stone for me to discover exactly the right words to describe the focus of my brand new project – the details of which are yet to be revealed!

Workshops for Writers with Julia Cameron

JuliaCameronI have to admit that I don’t often feel inspired to attend workshops for writers these days. Most of the time, I am at the front of the room presenting the event rather than participating in it!

However there are a few notable exceptions and I would like to share one of those with you. This is of special relevance to writers in the UK.

On 7th and 8th November, Julia Cameron, author of the international bestseller The Artist’s Way amongst many other titles, will be running two day long events in London.

Publishers Cancelling Books to Cut Costs

Books A recent article in trade magazine The Bookseller reveals that publishers are taking advantage of certain clauses in standard book contracts to back out of the deal.

These decisions are being made once manuscripts have been delivered and seem to be affecting new as well as more experienced, bigger named authors.

The view is that this is a cost cutting tactic which is happening more in the current climate of genuine caution which most people in the industry are feeling (despite the cries of ‘cautious optimisim’ which some houses are making).

How is this possible once a contract is signed you might well ask?

Nurture Your Creative Spirit

DreamsInspiration, imagination and creativity are important ingredients if you value a quality of life which is truly rich and rewarding.

Collectively they represent a powerful driving force which makes projects of any sort possible.
