Made a movie about this, would you and anyone else here consider looking at it real fast and let me know your opinion? I left the link in the website field, hopefully you can access it. I'd appreciate it greatly, thanks

Sounds like an excellent plan Rohana - good for you.

Let us know how you get on in due course, and perhaps post the idea in the IACCW Group on Facebook too to inspire others with your process and your results.

I've just bought a notebook in which I intend to write a comment about each book of historical fiction I read as this is the area of fiction I am trying to develop. (Only one page of handwriting for each book though so it remains succinct). I plan to say to myself why I really liked it and what I learned from reading it. And if there's anything I could incorporate into my own work. For example, the author might be brilliant at describing a character's physical appearance so you can easily envisage them. Or at conjuring up the setting so convincingly you can feel you are back in the time they are writing about. To learn how they did it! Then I will write down a passage taken from their book - just a paragraph or two - so I'll be able to look over it and see how much I can improve my own writing from reading their work. I think that this is a way I will enjoy to keep my love of writing to the forefront, so I keep being inspired to 'raise my bar.' Also, I plan to attend a talk in Manchester in October by the famous Bernard Cornwell, historical fiction writer par excellence. You can ask him anything you like so this notebook idea will prepare me.

Thanks Julia again for your inspiring thoughts!

Imagine being forty something all day and as the excitement builds, feeling the years fall away. Imagine being a teenager again as the music starts and sound waves start to reverberate through your being. Imagine dancing, in time...me!

The best live music is space travel, time travel and the joy of liberation.
And fantastic inspiration to me as a writer.

Hi Daphne - I do understand that it isn't always possible to put your writing first. Setting the intention is a good step in the right direction as you have already discovered and I'm so glad to hear that your commitment has increased as a result of this focus. As long as your writing is enough of a priority for you to get it done regularly to make the progress you know you are capable of, that's fine - until the time comes to raise the bar again! Delighted to know that my suggestions are taking root and bearing fruit - keep up the great work ;-)

Dear Julia, I have been trying to put my writing first, with some degree of success. Its not always possible. But I find that doing this increases my degree of commitment, the fact that I am doing it regularly means that I look forward to taking up the writing again. I don't do more than an hour or an hour and a half, but nevertheless I feel that I am advancing, slowly ! I have contacted a friend who writes and who has had a book published, and we are are going to meet up soon. I have also started rereading her book, which I find extremely well written to see if I can learn something from it. It is called Soul Song by Elizabeth Jones. I think it is a beautiful book. I have decided to visit somewhere new soon, following up on your latest message. I feel that all these ideas which you are putting out are working away in me somewhere and will bear fruit. Thank you so much. Daphne

Thank you, Amanda
In fact, being yourself is probably the most important thing of all. I believe that the secret to a successful career is that it is based on who you are, what matters and what you most love to do. I also think your best writing will come from a similar place.

Good luck with your dreams!

Jo,

Thanks so much for sharing your story. It is important that people realise that no matter how successful someone is, they are still human and they have had ups and downs on their way to success too. It has made me realise that I can pursue my dreams and still be myself.
