When I was working in-house as a director and publisher,
one of the most important aspects of my job

My time was extremely limited for assessing these approaches and so I had to make quick decisions about which proposals to look at in more detail. Most went straight on to the ‘reject’ pile but some made it through to the next level.
At the second stage of assessment, I read the covering letter, book proposal or synopsis, and sample chapters in more detail and based my decision regarding what happened next on that material.
Often the decision would be a rejection, sometimes it would be a request for more information, and occasionally I would invite the author in to a meeting to discuss the book in person.
